Tussell alternatives for defence teams that need more than UK market data
Tussell is the established UK public-sector market intelligence database, strongest on spend, frameworks and contacts. Defence suppliers look for alternatives when they need buyers outside the UK, a way to qualify and track individual bids, or published pricing. These are the realistic options, and the work Tussell still does better.
Short answer
Keep Tussell if your job is analysing the UK public-sector market. Add or switch to another tool if your job is finding, qualifying and deciding on individual defence tenders, especially outside the UK.
- 01Defense Explorer covers NATO/NSPA, EU and national sources as well as UK Find a Tender and Contracts Finder, and adds cited briefs, a requirements matrix and a capture pipeline.
- 02Stotles keeps the UK focus but adds a bid workflow, AI qualification, native Salesforce and HubSpot sync and a free tier.
- 03Tenderlake gives pan-European coverage, awards history back to 2012, a REST API and an MCP analyst at published prices.
- 04DCI is the UK defence specialist for teams who want defence-specific alerts from a certified, long-running provider.
- 05None of them matches Tussell’s depth on UK invoice-level spend and framework call-offs. For that work, Tussell stays.
Why teams look for alternatives to Tussell
[ THE EVIDENCE ]Tussell has earned its reputation. It has been running since 2015, serves most of the UK Government’s Strategic Suppliers, and its defence procurement tracker is a useful public reference, including its own caveat that MOD spend data is incomplete because the MOD is exempt from some publication rules. The reasons defence teams look elsewhere are about scope and workflow.
UK only. Tussell’s G-Cloud listing describes a database of UK government tenders, awards, frameworks and spending. A supplier bidding to NSPA, a Dutch or French defence buyer, or an EU Funding call needs a second source.
Research, not bid workflow. We found no pipeline, bid/no-bid record, document reading or generative assistant. Its AI flags buying signals in buyer documents for analysts to verify, which is valuable for early market intelligence but does not help you read a 200-page tender pack.
Pricing and terms. The plans page asks you to talk to sales, and the G-Cloud listing shows £11,400 per licence per year. The G-Cloud trial is limited to seven days and one page of results with no export, which makes a fair evaluation hard.
Data licence on exports. CSV downloads work, but they come with a data licence that runs 364 days and must be renewed or the data removed, per the G-Cloud terms. Our Tussell export guide explains what that means in practice.

The alternatives
[ 05 OPTIONS ]Ordered for a defence or dual-use supplier qualifying individual tenders. For pure UK market research the order reverses.
- 01[ OUR PRODUCT ]
Defense Explorer
- Best for
- Defence and dual-use suppliers who need to find and qualify tenders across the UK, EU and NATO
- Price
- Scout free; Analyst €129/month; Team €89 per seat/month (three-seat minimum), excl. VAT
Defense Explorer is built for the part of the job Tussell does not attempt: deciding whether a specific notice is worth bidding. It indexes TED, NATO/NSPA, the EU Funding & Tenders portal, TenderNed, UK Find a Tender and Contracts Finder, PLACSP and BOAMP, classifies defence relevance and clearance evidence, and scores each notice 0–100 against your company product lines with reasons, unknowns and blockers listed. It reads the tender documents into cited briefs and a requirements matrix, and the capture pipeline records who owns each pursuit and why the team bid or passed. For buyer history it offers early signals such as prior information notices and stated contract end dates, but nothing like Tussell’s spend data.
Strengths- +UK sources plus NATO/NSPA, EU Funding, TED and three EU national platforms
- +Cited briefs, requirement matrix and bid decisions on record
- +Published prices and a free Scout plan to evaluate on real data
- +REST API and MCP included on the Team plan
Watch-outs- –No UK invoice-level spend data or framework call-off analytics
- –No buyer decision-maker contact database
- –No native Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack or Teams app; those connect through the REST API
- –A young product with no public review-site ratings yet
- 02
Stotles
- Best for
- UK-focused sales teams who want contacts and a bid workflow in one tool
- Price
- Sales Studio: Free, Basic from £75/month, Growth from £475/month, Expert custom. Bid Studio: Free (3 lifetime AI reports), Growth and Expert tiers. Contracts auto-renew unless 45 days’ notice is given
Stotles is the natural move for a UK team that wants to act on opportunities, not just analyse the market. It combines tenders, pre-tender signals, expiring contracts, spend and contacts with Salesforce and HubSpot sync, AI bid/no-bid reports and a free tier. It shares Tussell’s UK and Ireland boundary. See Stotles vs Tussell.
Strengths- +Deep UK and Ireland data: pre-tender signals, expiring contracts, spend and buyer contacts
- +Native Salesforce and HubSpot sync, plus Slack
- +Free tier and published entry prices
- +MCP connector for mainstream AI assistants on paid plans
Watch-outs- –UK and Ireland focus; no NATO agency or continental national portals
- –Defence is a UK MOD keyword page, not a defence product
- –Advanced tiers are custom-priced and contracts auto-renew
- –No documented bulk data export
- 03
Tenderlake
- Best for
- Teams that need UK and European coverage with an API, at published prices
- Price
- UK+IE £325/month (£249/month billed yearly); Europe/UK/Int+ £546/month (£396/month billed yearly); Analyst AI add-on on pay-as-you-go credits; 7-day free trial
Tenderlake adds the EU and EEA to UK coverage, with awards history back to 2012 for competitor and renewal analysis, which makes it the closest to Tussell’s research use across Europe. It publishes GBP prices, a REST API with OpenAPI 3 and an MCP analyst. It has no spend data or defence classification.
Strengths- +Broad UK and pan-European coverage with 24-language search and translation
- +Mature developer surface: REST API with OpenAPI 3 and an MCP analyst
- +Awards history back to 2012 for competitor and renewal analysis
- +Published pricing and a no-card trial
Watch-outs- –Generalist: no defence relevance or clearance classification, no NATO agency sources
- –Priced in GBP, with AI analyst usage billed separately on credits
- –No document-level cited briefs or requirement matrix documented
- –Folder export steps documented only by video
- 04
DCI
- Best for
- UK defence suppliers who want defence-specific alerts and framework mapping
- Price
- Four plans (iconIQ, logIQ, dynamIQ, analytIQ) with 1–5 licences and no published prices; one-year minimum that auto-renews unless cancelled in writing 30 days before renewal; 3-day free trial
DCI overlaps with Tussell on UK defence spend and frameworks, adds defence-specific tender feeds such as MOD eNotice and Delta eSourcing, and holds ISO 27001, which Tussell’s G-Cloud listing says it does not. It is also quote-only with a one-year minimum. See DCI vs Tussell.
Strengths- +Decades of defence-specific tender coverage and a recognised UK defence brand
- +UK MOD sources, defence spend and framework mapping
- +ISO 27001 and JOSCAR certification
- +A dedicated success manager on every plan
Watch-outs- –No published prices; one-year minimum with auto-renewal
- –No NATO agency sources claimed; listed plans scoped to UK & ROI
- –AI limited to summaries inside the product; no MCP
- –API only on the top plan, without public documentation
- 05
The official portals, used directly
- Best for
- Very small teams with a narrow buyer list and time to search by hand
- Price
- Free
Every notice the paid tools index starts life on a public portal. UK buyers publish on Find a Tender and Contracts Finder, EU above-threshold notices appear on TED, and NATO’s support agency publishes its opportunities on the NSPA eProcurement portal. If you sell to two or three buyers and already know which portal they use, searching those portals yourself costs nothing. What you give up is one view across them, deduplication, any judgement about fit, and help reading the tender documents.
Strengths- +No licence cost
- +The notice and documents come straight from the buyer
- +No dependency on a vendor’s coverage choices
Watch-outs- –One portal at a time, each with its own search and account
- –No cross-portal deduplication or fit scoring
- –Easy to miss amendments and deadline changes
How to choose
[ BEFORE YOU TRIAL ]Many teams keep Tussell for research and add a second tool for bidding. Decide which job you are hiring for.
- 01Split last quarter’s Tussell use into market research and tender qualification; the second is where alternatives help
- 02List the non-UK buyers you bid to, and check each alternative covers their portal
- 03Ask whether you need spend data at invoice level, or only awards and contract end dates
- 04Check whether your security team requires ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials or neither
- 05Plan for the data licence on anything you have downloaded from Tussell
- 06Evaluate on real notices; a trial that caps results tells you little
- 07If you use Power BI or a CRM fed by Tussell’s API, map which fields the replacement must supply
Moving off Tussell
Downloaded Tussell data carries licence obligations, and account data is deleted after termination. Our guide covers requesting your saved search filters, what you may keep, and how to rebuild alerts elsewhere.
Questions
[ 06 ANSWERS ]01What is the best Tussell alternative for defence companies?
For qualifying defence tenders across the UK, EU and NATO, Defense Explorer. For UK defence alerts from a specialist, DCI. For UK sales with CRM sync, Stotles.
02How much does Tussell cost?
Tussell does not publish prices on its plans page. Its G-Cloud 14 listing shows £11,400 per licence per year, on an annual subscription.
03Does Tussell cover EU or NATO procurement?
No. Its G-Cloud listing describes UK government data only, and we found no EU, EU Funding or NATO agency coverage as of 15 September 2026.
04Is there a Tussell alternative with spend data?
DCI offers UK defence spend analysis, and Stotles includes invoiced spend. None of the European tools here, Defense Explorer included, offers invoice-level spend.
05Can I keep data I downloaded from Tussell after cancelling?
The G-Cloud terms license data selections for 364 days, after which they must be renewed or removed, but let you keep content already incorporated into internal business documents. Check your own order form. More in our Tussell export guide.
06When should I stay with Tussell?
When your team mainly researches the UK public-sector market, depends on spend and framework call-off analysis, or feeds Tussell data into BI dashboards.
Sources and method
[ HOW THIS WAS WRITTEN ]Defense Explorer wrote this page, and we sell a product in this category, so read it with that in mind. Competitor details come only from each vendor’s public website, help centre, terms and review listings, checked on 15 September 2026, and every claim links to its source below. We have not used every product under a paid contract. Where we could not verify something we say so rather than guess. Prices and features change: confirm on the vendor’s site before you buy.
