We scored each tool on seven criteria, weighted for the reader of this page. Defence relevance: does it filter out fire engines and office furniture, and say why a notice is defence work? NATO and national coverage: which EU, UK, NATO agency and national sources does it actually index, per its own coverage pages? Qualification depth: does it help decide whether to bid, with cited document evidence rather than a bare score? Collaboration: pipeline, owners, comments and recorded decisions. Integrations: API, MCP, CRM, Slack or Teams. Pricing transparency: published prices, trial and contract terms. Data portability: can you get your work out when you leave?

For this page we weighted UK source depth (MOD sources, frameworks, spend, contacts) and defence relevance highest, and NATO and European coverage lower than in our European guide, because the reader’s pipeline is mostly UK.

Everything about competitors comes from their public websites, help centres, terms and review listings, checked on 15 September 2026. We did not score accuracy of alerts, because that needs identical test notices run through every product, which vendors’ marketing cannot substitute for. Its UK defence procurement tracker is a good free sample of its data, and its own caveat is worth repeating: MOD is exempt from some invoice-level publication rules, so defence spend figures are indicative. It is research depth rather than a bid workflow.

It ranks below DCI and Tussell here because defence is a segment page rather than a product, but for a sales-led team its CRM sync and free tier are compelling.

The MOD’s procurement guidance directs suppliers to Find a Tender and says its advertised requirements appear on the Defence Sourcing Portal, so register there too. What the free route lacks is filtering, scoring, documents in one place and anything beyond the UK.

Combining tools

[ PRACTICE ]

UK defence suppliers commonly run two layers: an intelligence tool for accounts and renewals, and a bid tool for what to pursue this month. Tussell or Stotles cover the first well. For the second, pick on where you bid: DCI if it is the UK, a tool with EU and NATO coverage if it is not. See DCI vs Tussell and Stotles vs Tussell for those pairings.

Whatever you buy, keep the free government alerts and a Defence Sourcing Portal registration running. They are the ground truth any paid tool should be checked against.

Before you sign

Questions to put to any vendor, including us.

  • 01Send five notices you bid on last year and ask whether the tool would have found each one, from which source, and when.
  • 02Ask for the source list, not a portal count: which NATO agencies, which national platforms, and which are live today versus planned.
  • 03Ask how a sparse notice is scored. A missing clearance or eligibility statement should be shown as unknown, not treated as a pass.
  • 04Check the contract: minimum term, auto-renewal, notice period and whether prices can rise at renewal.
  • 05Find the export: what leaves the product as a file or through an API, and what the terms say happens to your data at the end.
  • 06Price the whole team, including the engineers and reviewers who only need to read a brief once a month.
  • 07Ask where data is hosted and which AI providers process tender documents and your company profile.
  • 08Run a two-week trial on live work, not the demo account.

MOD’s procurement guidance says its advertised requirements appear on the Defence Sourcing Portal and directs suppliers to Find a Tender. Lower-value opportunities can also appear on Contracts Finder. Read MOD’s guidance for current details.

Is DCI or Tussell better for UK defence?

They do different jobs. DCI is a defence-specific alerts and intelligence service; Tussell is a UK-wide market intelligence database with the deepest spend and framework data. See DCI vs Tussell.

Yes, from UK Find a Tender and Contracts Finder, filtered to defence-relevant notices. It does not index the Defence Sourcing Portal and has no UK spend, framework or contact data.

Is there free UK defence tender software?

Find a Tender and Contracts Finder are free and offer alerts. Stotles has a free tier and Defense Explorer a free Scout plan. None of the free options gives the spend and framework depth of paid UK specialists.

How reliable is UK MOD spend data?

Tussell’s own defence tracker notes that the MOD is exempt from some invoice-level publication requirements, so its figures are incomplete and indicative. Treat any MOD spend total with that caveat.
