UK depth vs European reach
Tussell’s data is UK government: tenders, awards, frameworks and call-offs, spend, and early opportunities its AI finds in central government, local government and NHS documents, each checked by an analyst. It also publishes a UK defence procurement tracker. Tussell is candid that the MOD is exempt from some invoice publication rules, so its own defence spend figures are marked as incomplete and indicative.
Defense Explorer covers the UK’s Find a Tender and Contracts Finder, filtered to defence-relevant notices, and then everything Tussell does not: NSPA, TED, the EU Funding & Tenders portal, TenderNed, PLACSP and BOAMP. If your growth plan includes NATO agencies or continental ministries, Tussell will not show those opportunities at all.
Market intelligence vs bid qualification
Tussell helps a team decide where to sell: which buyers spend in a category, which frameworks they use, who holds the incumbent contract and who to call. It includes a named account manager and an analyst research service. We do not have spend data, framework call-off analytics or a contact database, and a UK team that needs them should not expect Defense Explorer to replace Tussell.
Defense Explorer helps a team decide whether to bid on a specific notice. It scores fit per product line with the reasons, lists what the notice did not state, and shows blockers such as a clearance you do not hold. It reads the documents with page citations, builds a requirement matrix against your evidence, flags amendments, and stores the bid/no-bid decision with its rationale. Tussell documents none of these.
How data leaves each product
Tussell data downloads from the web app as CSV. Its G-Cloud order form caps spend downloads at 500,000 rows and attaches a data licence: selections are licensed for 364 days, must be refreshed every 30 days, and must be renewed or removed afterwards. Framework lot data is not in normal downloads and comes through the paid API. After termination you can ask in writing for personal data and saved search filters; account data is then deleted.
Defense Explorer exports requirements as CSV, briefs as PDF and qualification packs as PDF or XLSX, and serves everything else through the REST API. Public notices link to the official source documents. See how to export data from Tussell before you plan a switch.
Buying, security and trials
Tussell sells annual subscriptions through sales. Its G-Cloud 14 listing shows UK hosting, Cyber Essentials (not Plus) and no ISO 27001, and a trial limited to seven days, one page of results and no export. The sample order form on G-Cloud sets a 12-month minimum with no auto-renewal and no cancellation during the term.
