Tenderlake and Defense Explorer are closer than most pairs: both match on capability rather than keywords, both publish a REST API, and both connect to AI assistants over MCP. The difference is scope. Tenderlake covers the whole UK and European public sector; Defense Explorer is built for defence.

Coverage: the whole market or the defence slice
Tenderlake states that above-threshold coverage of the UK, EU and EEA is full and continuous back to 2012, with World Bank and development agency notices, one search across 24 languages and automatic translation into English. It excludes below-threshold purchases and framework call-offs that do not name suppliers. For a supplier selling across the European public sector, that is much wider than anything Defense Explorer offers.
Defense Explorer is deliberately narrower: TED, NATO/NSPA, EU Funding & Tenders, TenderNed, UK Find a Tender, UK Contracts Finder, Spain’s PLACSP and France’s BOAMP, with national platforms filtered to defence-relevant notices. The source Tenderlake does not list is NSPA. Neither product indexes NCIA today. We keep Spanish and French notices in their original language and add English titles and summaries.
Matching and classification
Tenderlake matches on a capability description rather than keywords or CPV codes, explains relevance and concerns, and learns from feedback. That is close to how Defense Explorer works, and worth saying plainly.
The difference is what sits next to the score. Defense Explorer classifies every notice as military, dual-use, civil security or unrelated with the reason shown, records clearance evidence as stated, inferred, none or unknown, scores per product line, and keeps unknowns and blockers out of the average. A strong fit that requires a clearance you do not hold is shown as blocked, not as a 90. Tenderlake does not document defence or clearance classification.
Notice-level or document-level intelligence
Tenderlake’s AI works across notices and awards: AI summaries, cited answers in its Analyst connector, demand signals and renewal forecasts from contract history. Its awards data supports competitor and partner tracking that Defense Explorer only partly matches.
Defense Explorer goes inside the tender package. Documents are parsed page by page, briefs cite the page and quote the text, requirements are extracted into a matrix you can correct and link to approved evidence with validity dates, and material amendments are shown clause by clause with the affected requirements flagged. Developer and AI access, side by side
Tenderlake’s REST API returns JSON with stable ids, has a lean mode and an OpenAPI 3 specification, and can write notices into shared folders. Access is arranged through its contact form. Tenderlake Analyst is a remote MCP connector for Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot, billed per search query and records retrieved, with questions about your own saved searches included in Monitor.
Defense Explorer’s REST API uses account-scoped keys created in the app and an OpenAPI 3.1 document. The MCP server is included on Team, with read tools for notices, briefs, requirements, pursuits and signals, and two narrow writes: recording a decision a person made, and acknowledging an amendment.
